  Biography

Anthony Roach is an Australian landscape photographer who lives on the coastal beaches of Sydney, Australia. With a PhD in marine biology, Anthony combines his skills as a photographer with his affinity and intimate knowledge of natural environments to produce images which capture seascapes with a unique perspective and mood.

Anthony's surreal seascapes harmonise the evocative forms of coastal landscapes, the swash of the sea and saturated colors of morning's first light. These images have been taken using both 35mm and large format cameras. He displays his work in fine art galleries and at exhibitions in Sydney and sells work as limited edition prints to people from all over the world.

  About the Locations

The majority of the locations Coogee, Clovelly, Bondi etc are located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney Australia. I live in Coogee and can quickly bolt down to the pools and beaches when i see the conditions are right. From time to time I also go to the beautiful Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay. This is a most beautiful place and I look forward to posting some of my images from here. For additional information on Jervis Bay also see the Jervis Bay Tourism site

  About my technique

I frequently recieve emails asking about how the techniques I use. Of particular interest is how I meter a scene in the early morning light. Basically I use a modified zone metering approach and spot meter off a bit of the scene which I think I can guess the zone relatively accurately then I continuously meter off that spot throughout the shot - if the exposure time decreases markedly (remembering the amount of light is increasing all the time) I usually adjust the exposure time down.

I have done a fair bit of experimentation on how to meter the types of scenes I usually work with and also what exposure adjustments work best with the film I usually use (Fuji Velvia). These bits of information are the secret herbs and spices of getting the exposures I favour. Now I am not about to give it all away but suffice to say its really the result of systematic experimentation and anyone can work out something similar. The exposure and equipment details for many of my shots are given with the images given when you search the photo database.

I do not use colour filters to create a colourful scene, although I have used a blue filter to achieve certain effects (see Image 43 as an example). I also sometimes correct certain colour casts where they appear too strong and to make the scene appear closer to transparency. I find scanners often over emphasize certain casts which result from reciprocity failure and this can detract from the colours seen in the transparency, the effect of this is usually to tone the image down not to enhance the image. The colours in my images come from two factors great light and colour shifts due to reciprocity failure. Great light is far the most important factor. This sort of light does not happen every time I go out. I usually visit a location numerous times before I get what I want. Perseverence is really the key.

  About My Equipment

My initial forays into landscape photography were done using 35mm cameras, my current kit consists of a Nikon F70, Sigma 24mm F2.8, Sigma 28-70mm APO F2.8, Tamron 90mm F2.8 SP macro.

I am currently using a Linhof Master Technika with two lenses a 135mm Schneider Symmar convertible (a fairly average lens) and an 80mm Schneider Super Symmar XL (a better than average lens). With this kit I shoot 5x4 readyloads or rollfilm.
